“Safety is Caltrans’ number one priority, and this program will make sure our children’s travel to and from school is safe and healthy,” said Caltrans Director Will Kempton.

The funds will be used for safety improvement projects such as new sidewalks, bike trails, and marked crosswalks. The funds will also be used for education, encouragement, and enforcement activities that promote safe walking and bicycling to school. Since the federal program's inception in 2005, Caltrans has awarded $91 million for 219 Safe Routes to School projects. In 2000, California became the first state in the nation to legislate a state Safe Routes to School program. To date, Caltrans has awarded $196 million for 709 projects through its state program. To ensure a fair and competitive project selection, Caltrans works closely with a diverse group of state, local and regional stakeholders with backgrounds in transportation, health, education, law enforcement, and bicycle/pedestrian advocacy.
