Bakersfield’s Safe Routes to School Program (SRTS) focuses on improving children’s safety while getting to and from school. Encouraging more students to walk and bicycle to school is a central mission of the SRTS Program, and the program benefits stretch beyond the school day by:

  • reducing speeds in school zones & neighborhoods
  • addressing distracted driving among drivers of all ages
  • educating generations on pedestrian & bicycle safety

Walking, rolling & bicycling to school helps students:

  • arrive at school energized & ready to learn
  • leave the car behind and reduce dependence on fossil fuels
  • take an active role in their well-being and the well-being of their community

Working toward a safe route to school can help communities:

  • build a sense of neighborhood
  • encourage increased parental involvement at school and beyond
  • promote driving safely in school zones and the larger community

Participating in a Safe Routes to School program improves the health of our children and community. That's an encouraging outcome for a lifetime.
